Over 10,000 fake foreign student acceptance letters flagged by Canadian authorities

A significant rise in fraudulent foreign student acceptance letters has been revealed, with more than 10,000 potentially fake documents flagged by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) this year. This represents a significant increase of 30% compared to the previous year. These letters, submitted as part of study permit applications, are under scrutiny following enhanced checks by Canadian immigration authorities, as reported by The Globe and Mail

According to Bronwyn May, the Director-General of the IRCC's International Students Branch, the verification process revealed widespread misuse of fraudulent documents. "Since we began verifying acceptance letters from colleges and universities over the past year, we have intercepted more than 10,000 potentially fraudulent letters," May said in a statement to the House of Commons immigration committee last week.

The alarming discovery follows a broader investigation into the misuse of immigration documents. While 93 per cent of the 500,000 acceptance letters checked by IRCC over the past 10 months were confirmed as genuine, the remaining documents raised serious concerns. A small but significant 2 per cent of letters were found to be entirely fake, while 1 per cent of applicants had their places at Canadian institutions cancelled.
