Apple plans to take on Amazon and Google with new iPad-like device for your home, coming next year
Apple is preparing to launch a wall-mounted smart display device as early as March 2025, as it searches for its next big moneymaker. The smart display positions the company to compete directly with Amazon and Google, which have been in the smart home market for almost a decade.
The device, code-named J490, features a 6-inch square touchscreen and will function as a home command centre for controlling appliances, making video calls, and interacting with Apple's AI assistant. The product will showcase the company's new Apple Intelligence AI platform, Bloomberg reports.

CEO Tim Cook has made the smart home device a priority after three years of development, as Apple seeks to gain ground against competitors like Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub. The company plans to price the device competitively with these rivals, which typically range from $150-230.
The new product will run on a custom operating system nicknamed "Pebble," featuring an interface that blends elements from the Apple Watch OS and iPhone's StandBy mode. While touch-enabled, the device is primarily designed for voice control through Siri and Apple Intelligence.
According to Gurman's sources, the display includes proximity sensors to automatically adjust its interface based on user distance. It will come with built-in speakers, a camera for FaceTime calls, and a rechargeable battery. Apple plans to offer it in silver and black colour options.
The company is also developing accessories, including wall mounts and speaker bases for placement in various rooms. Multiple units can function as an intercom system throughout the home.
A more expensive version featuring a robotic arm that can move the screen is also in development, potentially priced up to $1,000, Bloomberg reports.
The smart display will integrate with Apple's HomeKit framework to control third-party smart home devices like thermostats, lights, and security cameras. While functioning largely as a standalone device, it will require an iPhone for initial setup and certain features.
