Sushila Karki: A Pioneering Figure

Sushila Karki, a prominent figure in the Gen Z movement, is recognized as the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of Nepal. She took office on July 11, 2016, marking a significant milestone in the country's judicial history.

In 2017, Karki faced an impeachment motion initiated by the Maoist Centre and the Nepali Congress in Parliament. However, due to public outcry and a Supreme Court interim order, the motion was ultimately withdrawn.

Educational Background and Career Path

Karki earned her Bachelor of Arts from Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar in 1975, followed by a Master’s in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in India. She later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Tribhuvan University in Nepal.


She began her legal career in Biratnagar in 1979 and briefly worked as an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus in Dharan in 1985. By 2007, she had advanced to the position of Senior Advocate.


Karki was appointed as an Ad-Hoc Justice at the Supreme Court on January 22, 2009, and became a Permanent Justice on November 18, 2010. She served as Acting Chief Justice from April 13, 2016, until her official appointment as Chief Justice on July 11, 2016, a role she held until June 7, 2017.


Literary Contributions

In addition to her judicial career, Sushila Karki is also an accomplished author. Her autobiography, titled Nyaya

, was published on September 28, 2018. She followed this with a novel, Kara, released in December 2019, which is set in Biratnagar Jail, where she was imprisoned during the Panchayat regime.
