A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula late Tuesday, unleashing chaos across the region. The quake struck near the coast, causing widespread panic, structural damage, and triggering a tsunami warning across parts of the Pacific.

Tremors Strike Without Warning

The earthquake hit at around 23:24 GMT, with its epicentre located about 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a major city in Kamchatka. Initially measured at 8.0, the US Geological Survey later revised the figure to 8.7 following new seismic data. The quake originated at a shallow depth of just 19.3 km, amplifying the surface impact.

Tsunami Alert Issued Across Pacific Region

Following the quake, the USGS warned of the potential for destructive tsunami waves to strike coastal areas in Russia and Japan within hours. Emergency sirens sounded across vulnerable zones, urging coastal residents to evacuate to higher ground and remain alert.

Scenes of Chaos Captured on Video

Videos circulating on social media painted a terrifying picture - buildings shook violently, glass shattered, and furniture was flung across rooms. Alarming footage from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky showed people rushing out of buildings barefoot and in panic as aftershocks loomed.

Power Failures and Communication Blackouts

Russian state media reported widespread power outages and mobile network disruptions in Kamchatka's capital. In many homes, cabinets collapsed and mirrors broke under the intense tremors. Cars were seen swaying on roads, and balconies visibly shook.

Emergency Services on High Alert

Authorities on Sakhalin Island began evacuations as a precaution. Emergency teams were deployed across the region and are working around the clock to assess damage and support residents. With aftershocks expected, people have been advised to remain vigilant and follow all official advisories.

Earthquake Strikes in High-Risk Zone

The Kamchatka Peninsula sits on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, an area notorious for frequent seismic activity. The quake near Avacha Bay is a grim reminder of the region’s vulnerability to such natural disasters.

As rescue efforts continue and assessments are carried out, the people of Kamchatka remain on edge—watching, waiting, and hoping for calm after the storm.
