Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Discontinued After A Decade: Here’s Why

Maruti Suzuki India has officially ceased production of the Ciaz, marking the end of its decade-long presence in the mid-size sedan segment. The decision was confirmed by Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India. Introduced in 2014, the Ciaz was positioned to compete with the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, and Nissan Sunny. While Maruti Suzuki has not ruled out the possibility of reviving the Ciaz nameplate in the future, there is currently no confirmation on such plans.


The Rise and Fall of the Ciaz
When the Ciaz debuted, it quickly became a popular choice among Indian buyers, thanks to its spacious interiors, affordability, and fuel efficiency. The model was particularly appreciated for its comfort, with ample legroom and a well-appointed cabin that made it a favourite among families and chauffeur-driven customers. Between 2017 and 2018, the Ciaz was one of the strongest contenders in the mid-size sedan category, playing a key role in Maruti Suzuki’s sales success.

Despite receiving a facelift in 2018, the Ciaz struggled to maintain its market position in the following years. Newer competitors introduced more advanced features, sleeker designs, and modernised technology, making it difficult for the Ciaz to keep up. Gradually, its sales started to decline, leading Maruti Suzuki to shift its focus away from the sedan segment.


Market Shifts and the Rise of SUVs
The decline of the Ciaz reflects a broader trend in the Indian automobile industry. Over the past few years, consumer preferences have shifted dramatically in favour of SUVs, which now dominate the market. The growing demand for SUVs is driven by their superior road presence, higher ground clearance, and rugged appeal. By the 2024-25 fiscal year, Ciaz sales had dropped by 34% compared to the previous year, a clear indication of the shifting landscape. While sedans once held a significant share of the Indian passenger vehicle market, SUVs have now overtaken them, prompting manufacturers to adjust their strategies accordingly. Maruti Suzuki, like many other carmakers, is now investing more resources into its SUV lineup, hybrid vehicles, and electric mobility solutions.


Competition and Technological Lag
Another major challenge for the Ciaz was its inability to match the evolving technological standards of the industry. Competitors such as the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia offered more advanced infotainment systems, premium interiors, and cutting-edge safety features. As buyers increasingly prioritised modern technology and connectivity, the Ciaz struggled to meet their expectations.

While the Ciaz was periodically updated to remain competitive, the changes were not enough to keep pace with rapidly evolving consumer demands. The sedan segment as a whole has seen a gradual decline, with manufacturers focusing their attention on more lucrative SUV models.

Maruti Suzuki’s Future Strategy
With the discontinuation of the Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki is unlikely to introduce a direct replacement in the near future. Instead, the company is directing its efforts toward strengthening its SUV portfolio. Models such as the Grand Vitara, Brezza, and Fronx have already seen strong demand, reinforcing Maruti Suzuki’s decision to prioritise this segment.

Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is investing in hybrid and electric vehicles to align with evolving global automotive trends and India’s push towards cleaner mobility solutions. The company’s growing focus on electrification and alternative powertrains suggests that future product offerings may move further away from traditional sedans.

The discontinuation of the Ciaz marks the end of an era for Maruti Suzuki in the mid-size sedan category. While the model was once a key player in its segment, changing consumer preferences, increased competition, and a market shift towards SUVs ultimately led to its exit.
