As India gears up for its opening Test match against Australia in Perth, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to secure the sole spinner's role. Reports indicate that the Indian management is leaning towards Ashwin's inclusion, particularly to counter Australia's lineup, which is anticipated to feature at least three left-handed batters .

The Optus Stadium pitch is expected to favor pace, with a green surface promising significant assistance for fast bowlers. India's strategy seems to involve deploying three seamers, a pace-bowling all-rounder in Nitish Kumar Reddy—poised for his Test debut—and Ashwin as the sole spinner. Ashwin's track record against left-handed batters, including Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and Alex Carey, adds weight to this decision. Additionally, Ashwin's ability to challenge Steve Smith, as seen in previous encounters, strengthens his case.

India has brought a contingent of three spinners for the five-match Test series, beginning November 22. Alongside Ashwin, the squad includes left-arm all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and off-spinner Washington Sundar.

Despite his illustrious career, Ashwin has played only 10 Tests in Australia, taking 39 wickets at an average of 42.15. Balancing Ashwin and Jadeja in overseas matches has often been a challenge for the Indian team, with Jadeja's batting contributions frequently tipping the scales in his favor.

However, the current team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir , appears focused on tactical matchups. This approach was evident during India's recent home series against New Zealand, where Washington Sundar was brought in late to counter a lineup rich in left-handers.
