“Virat, Dhoni, Rohit And Kumble Took A Wrong Decision”: Former Coach Recalls India’s Champions Trophy Blunder
Virat Kohli was an outstanding captain, leading India to success across all formats. However, despite consistently reaching the knockout stages, the team was unable to clinch an ICC tournament title under his leadership.
One of the most heartbreaking defeats came against Pakistan in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. Although India had defeated Pakistan convincingly in the group stage, they failed to put up a fight in the final against Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side.
After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first—a decision that backfired as Pakistan posted a massive total of 338/4. In response, India were dismissed for just 158 runs. Looking back at the match, former batting coach Sanjay Bangar admitted that the leadership group made a crucial error in judgment.
“The sun was out, and we should have batted first. Virat Kohli, head coach Anil Kumble, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and I were part of the decision,” Bangar said during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo.
Hardik Pandya, who was in exceptional form, kept India’s slim hopes alive with his attacking stroke play. However, his unfortunate run-out ended all chances of a comeback.
“We lost all the main batters early in the innings but Hardik was going great guns. We knew we were out of the game but Hardik gave us some hope. He was furious when that run-out happened but the all-rounder didn’t say anything to Jadeja. He was livid with himself as he couldn’t win the match for his country,” Bangar added.
