The Indian women's cricket team faces a challenging path after New Zealand’s 60-run defeat to Australia in the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup . With this result, Australia secured the top position in Group A, winning both their matches so far. Meanwhile, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan are all tied on two points each, with one win from their two matches.

Australia’s innings was led by opener Beth Mooney, who top-scored with 40 off 32 balls. Ellyse Perry contributed a solid 30 off 24 balls, and Alyssa Healy provided a brisk start with 26 off 20. The Australian team posted a formidable total of 148 for eight.

Standing:
New Zealand’s response fell short, as they were bowled out for just 88 runs in 19.2 overs. Megan Schutt shone with figures of 3 for 3 from 3.2 overs, while Annabel Sutherland (3/21) and Sophie Molineux (2/15) played key roles in dismantling the Kiwis’ batting line-up.

Harmanpreet Kaur and her Indian side now face a tough situation, trailing in net run rate in Group A after a heavy loss to New Zealand in their opening game. Despite registering a win over Pakistan in their second match, the 18.5 overs they took to chase down a modest 106-run target did little to close the gap in net run rate.

With three of the five teams in the group locked on two points, the final group matches promise to be dramatic. As pre-tournament favorites, India now needs to win big in their remaining matches to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

India is currently in fourth place in the group, behind New Zealand and Pakistan, making their upcoming fixtures crucial.

India’s Remaining Fixtures:
  • October 9: India vs Sri Lanka
  • October 13: India vs Australia

To improve their Net Run Rate, India must secure a dominant win over Sri Lanka. The final group game against Australia, who are almost certain to reach the knockouts, will likely determine India's fate in the tournament.
