Vinesh Phogat's Vision for Young Athletes

New Delhi [India] - On April 12, former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat revealed her plans to create a top-tier sports academy for aspiring athletes, utilizing the Rs 4 crore prize she received from the Haryana government.

This financial award is part of Haryana's elite sports initiative, which offers medalists the choice of a government position, land, or cash rewards. The scheme allocates Rs. 6 crore for Olympic gold, Rs. 4 crore for silver, and Rs. 2.5 crore for bronze. Although Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50kg category due to a minor weight issue, she still received the cash prize designated for silver medalists.

Phogat announced her academy plans on her official social media account, stating, “When a player’s dedication is acknowledged, that is the true victory. The public has bestowed upon me immense love, respect, trust, courage, and encouragement. Now, it’s time to give back. As a public figure and someone who has faced numerous challenges, my duty extends beyond just one athlete; it encompasses the dreams of countless individuals aspiring to succeed in sports within a secure environment. It has always been my aspiration to enhance facilities and create a supportive sports culture for the next generation. That moment has arrived. I am eternally grateful for the respect and honor bestowed upon me by society and the Haryana government for my Olympic achievements,” she expressed in a post on X.

“This government prize is not merely a reward; it represents an opportunity, a pathway to realize a long-held dream. Thus, this funding will be directed towards establishing an international-standard sports academy, where young talents can elevate their skills with the finest resources. An academy where young athletes are not hindered by a lack of resources and receive the respect and motivation that every diligent player deserves. I will need your support, as this is not just my dream but a collective aspiration, and it is our shared responsibility to make it a reality,” she added.

Following her retirement from wrestling shortly after her disqualification at the Paris Olympic Games, Vinesh transitioned into politics.

During her weigh-in for the 50-kg category, she was found to be over the limit by approximately 100 grams before the final match, where she was set to compete for gold against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the United States.

After joining the Congress party last year, Vinesh ran for a seat in the Haryana Assembly and is currently serving as an MLA from Julana.
